Hoosier Hills Food Bank, a local agency that provides food to pantries and shelters across 6 counties, announced that 2020 was a record-setting year. The organization distributed 7,089,749 pounds of food, up 39% from the previous year.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges for HHFB including an increased need for food while also navigating a significant loss of volunteers and a 23-25% decrease in local donations. The donation loss was recovered through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program in addition to purchases made by the Food Bank. Hoosier Hills then reworked their normal distribution efforts to accommodate COVID safety protocols, including on-site distributions such as their Fresh Food Fridays that took place last summer. In lieu of their normal volunteer base, the Indiana National Guard stepped in to help with distribution.

Next month they will virtually host their 27th Annual Soup Bowl Benefit. Tickets and more details can be found on their website. HHFB is also currently in need of volunteers to assist with various needs. Interested parties should call (812) 334-8374 or email volunteer@hhfoodbank.org.

One year ago, the food bank announced the arrival of a new refrigerated box truck, purchased with funds granted from community partners including BHF. HHFB also recognized BHF during their 2020 Hunger Action Awards for coordinating the Food Security subgroup of the City of Bloomington’s Social Services Working Group.
