The Bloomington Health Foundation (BHF) recently awarded multi-year grants totaling nearly $800,000 to five non-profits as part of their 2022 Request for Proposal.  Priority was given to proposals that focused on BHF’s impact areas which include access to health services, non-emergency medical transportation, healthy eating and behaviors, mental health, and food security. As part of BHF’s new Lead and Convene Model, funding levels began at $50,000 and could span up to five years. “Empowering organizations by investing in core infrastructure, growth and development is an important step to creating long-term sustainability”, said Michelle Gilchrist, BHF’s president and CEO.

Grant funds were awarded to the following non-profits:

HealthNet Bloomington Health Center to address gaps in care by expanding medical services provided through their Homeless Initiative Project for homeless clients living on the street and in shelters in Monroe County.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard to expand and revamp the Education Program and Garden Program to address food insecurity by reducing barriers to access, and ensuring patrons are able to use kitchen and garden equipment to prepare and grow their own food.

New Hope for Families to provide early childcare and education to vulnerable children by ensuring access to health interventions and supportive services through subsidizing enrollments and helping to close the gap between the cost of childcare and value of the user-side subsidy.

Summit Hill Community Development Corporation to provide Bloomington Housing Authority clients with dedicated shuttle service to local grocery stores to access healthier and more economic food selections and to expand on-site pantry services.

Youth First to provide suicide prevention and mental health for K-12 students by supporting free access to highly trained health professionals using evidence-based programs.

Working to solve some of our community’s most pressing health issues has long been an important part of BHF’s mission. Focusing on specific impact areas and supporting non-profits with not only significant funding but also by convening local business and community experts represents a new strategic direction moving forward.
