Bloomington Health Foundation was proud to partner with the Bloomington Parks and Recreation within the City of Bloomington to promote a healthier summer.

In preparation for the Memorial Day Weekend opening of both Bryan Park and Mills Pools, aquatics program staff installed three new, 10′ deck umbrellas donated by the Bloomington Health Foundation. Along with these large umbrellas, Bloomington Health Foundation promised to provide FREE sunscreen for use for all pool patrons this summer in hopes to promote sun safety and skin cancer prevention.

No matter the time of year, sun safety is always in season. During the summer months, it can feel even more relevant though, as increased sun exposure often leads to sunburn. Sun exposure can not only cause sunburn, but also, skin aging (such as skin spots, wrinkles, or “leathery skin”), eye damage, and skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in the United States. In 2019, an estimated 1.3 million people were living with melanoma of the skin in the U.S.

It’s still possible to have fun in the sun and be outdoors. Just be sure to practice appropriate sun protection for both your skin and eyes!
