Preparation for Kids’ COVID Shots in Monroe County

On Friday, October 29th, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration gave Pfizer’s COVID Vaccine approval for children aged 5-11.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will still need to approve the vaccine before children can start getting the shot. If approved, the vaccines for children could be available as soon as the week of November 8th.

Similar to adults, children will receive two shots that are three weeks apart. Although, Pfizer’s COVID vaccine for children will only be a third of the dosage given to teens and adults.

The CDC currently recommends everyone 12 years and older should get a COVID-19 vaccination to help protect against COVID-19.

The Extension of the Countywide Mask Mandate

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners voted to extend the countywide mask mandate again last week.

On October 31st, 2021, the previous mask mandate was set to expire, but with the extension approved, it will now only expire based on local case data.

Monroe County’s COVID-19 positive case rate must drop to less than 50 cases per 100,000 residents and be in the blue advisory status for the mask mandate to be lifted.

Health Administrator Penny Caudill states, “We believe, we hope, we’re really close to that (goal of 50 cases per 100,000 residents).” Monroe County currently has the lowest case rate by county in the state, and with community cooperation, we can stop the spread!
