It’s very common for people to make a health-related New Year’s resolution, as the holidays are over and it signals a fresh start. Although, it is even more common for people to make highly restrictive, unsustainable, and/or unrealistic health goals that result in people breaking their resolutions.

Let’s break the cycle of breaking our resolutions and make resolutions that can improve our health and be followed for life! Here are some examples of simple, yet effective goals to set for yourself in 2022.

Sit less and move more. Making a resolution to sit less is an easy and attainable goal that can be tailored to fit your lifestyle. For example, if you have a desk job that requires long periods of sitting, make a resolution to get up and walk for 5 minutes every hour.

Prioritize getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can increase your risk of weight gain, heart disease, and depression. Try decreasing your screen time before bed, cutting back on caffeine, and/or getting to bed at a reasonable hour. These are all ways to improve your sleep hygiene.

Cut back on sweetened beverages. Sugary drinks are linked to an increased risk of obesity, fatty liver, heart disease, insulin resistance, and cavities in both children and adults. Though quitting sweetened beverages cold turkey is always an option, gradually minimizing your intake may help you kick your sugary drink habit for good.

Practice self-care regularly. Taking time for yourself is not selfish. In fact, it’s imperative for optimal health and wellbeing. Don’t overcomplicate it, draw a bath for yourself, attend a weekly yoga class, prepare a healthy meal for yourself, go for a walk in nature, or get an extra hour of sleep.

Be more present. Making a New Year’s resolution to be more mindful and present may help you feel more content in your everyday life. Spending less time on your phone, stopping to notice your environment, and listening intently to others are simple ways to be more present.

Take control of your health in 2022. Start today by making simple, yet effective goals that will help you become the best version of yourself this year!
