NEW MASK MANDATE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a new Health Order and Regulation requiring masks in public places this morning.  The mask mandate will go into effect at 8 a.m. Thursday, August 5th to give businesses time to put up signage, which is required. This comes after a rise in COVID-19 cases and county positivity rate, and new CDC guidance on masks. Under this order, masks will be required while indoors in public spaces, regardless of vaccination status.

MOST OF INDIANA’S COUNTIES FALL UNDER NEW CDC MASK GUIDANCE

Of Indiana’s 92 counties, 81 are considered high or substantial risk for COVID spread and fall under the new federal guidelines to mask up indoors regardless of vaccination status, and Monroe County is one of them. The CDC said on Tuesday that counties with more than 50 cases per 100,000 residents over a 7-day period should require wearing masks inside, even among those that are fully vaccinated.

IU SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH HONORS DR. FAUCI

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is set to receive the Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award, which recognizes “exemplary bearers of the standard of excellence and commitment needed to combat HIV/AIDS”, on December 6, 2021.

Dr. Fauci is being recognized for his work in HIV/AIDS prevention, as well as being a leader and expert during COVID-19. School of Public Health faculty have said that Fauci is “perhaps the most recognizable figure associated with infectious disease research and public awareness,” and “as we have stared down this demon of a pandemic, no figure has more prominently represented this commitment to science and truth than Dr. Fauci.”

Masks are expected to be required indoors in Monroe County this week as COVID infections rise. The new health order would include inside restaurants and bars and require masks regardless of vaccination status.
