Monroe County Leaders are Optimistic About the Decline of COVID-19 Cases

During a live-streamed, online call last week, local officials noted transmission rates and COVID-19 cases in Monroe County and at IU are declining. The county’s dashboard most recently indicated 441 weekly cases per 100,000 residents, making quite a decline from previous weeks. In January, weekly cases were as high as 1,452 per 100,000.

Penny Caudill explained, “We do remain in a red advisory this week with high transmission, but there are glimmers of hope … and we continue to see improvements across the county and the state.”

With this being said, Monroe County’s board of health plans to let the local mask mandate expire with Governor Eric Holcomb’s emergency order on March 4. The board will meet again on March 3 to discuss any future health orders and potentially approve them.

Spring Break Travel Tips

As spring break approaches and we begin to make travel plans for the rest of the year, so do potential health risks you should be aware of. Wherever your travels may take you this year, here are a few tips to make sure you’re staying safe and healthy throughout your entire trip.

Before you go, make sure you are up to date on all of your vaccinations and have all of your necessary medications. Depending on your travel destination, make sure to pack necessities like sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, a first aid kit, and other hygiene products.

While you’re on your trip, it’s necessary to ensure your safety at all times. Do your research beforehand and choose reputable travel guides, tour companies, and transportation services. Also, be careful when indulging in the local cuisine. In developing countries, eat only food that has been fully cooked and served hot. Drink only bottled, sealed beverages, and steer clear of ice—it was probably made with tap water.

After you return from your trip, take inventory of your health. You could have picked up a virus or other infection during your trip, even though you did not have symptoms until you returned. If you’re not feeling well after your trip, call your doctor and tell them where you have traveled, including where you went and what you did on your trip.
