On May 14, the Monroe County Health Department issued a  press release that it would be rescinding current COVID restrictions and guidelines effective May 17, 2021. Also effective May 17th, the City of Bloomington issued Executive Order 20-04 rescinding Executive Order 20-03 which placed restrictions on gathering size limits in the city. These changes fall in line with the CDC’s updated guidance that fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear a mask or practice social distancing.

Though these orders have been rescinded, businesses reserve the right to require masks in their establishments. Target and CVS have asked that customers who are not fully vaccinated continue mask usage and social distancing and many local businesses have communicated that mask usage is required when shopping with them on their respective social media pages.

Monroe County Health Department Health Administrator Penny Caudill noted that masks are also still required on federal and state properties, COVID-19 vaccine and testing sites, public transportation, schools, and healthcare facilities. In addition, it is still strongly suggested that those who are not fully vaccinated continue to practice COVID-safe precautions of masking and distancing.

Caudill also shared that the unvaccinated represent 99% of new COVID cases in the state. More than half of Indiana’s adult population has been partially or fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Children ages 12-15 are now able to get the Pfizer vaccine after the company obtained FDA authorization.

Registration for the vaccine can be made at ourshot.in.gov or without an appointment through participating walk-in locations, such as Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. For those without transportation to a vaccine appointment, call 2-1-1 to request a transportation voucher.
