Indiana University’s Grand Challenges Initiative has been active since 2016 in researching and providing solutions to Hoosiers’ most critical health, social, and environmental issues. One initiative launched in 2017, Responding to the Addictions Crisis, has focused on assisting those coping with substance use disorders, prevention, and dismantling the public stigma surrounding the disease.

In partnership with the IU School of Nursing, Grand Challenges now offers two online courses that are free to the public: In this Together: Community Conversations to Reduce Stigma of Substance Use Disorder and Substance Use Disorders: An Introduction for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals. The latter offers continuing nursing education contact hours.

Ongoing reports state that isolation and social distancing resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated issues surrounding substance use disorder. If someone you know needs assistance, contact the Indiana Addiction Hotline, the Stride Center, or BeWell Indiana for more information.
