Bloomington has been under a heat advisory warning nearly all week this week and will likely be under one again next week. With the temps soaring to the upper 90s and even 100s, extra precautions need to be taken in order to keep you, your family, and even your furry friends safe.

Despite the fact that heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable, more than 600 people in the United States are killed by extreme heat every year. Don’t let this happen to you or someone you love. Instead, stay cool, stay informed, and stay hydrated! Here are a few tips for staying hydrated even on the hottest of summer days!

1. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. On extremely hot days, your body will need even more water than normal.

2. Regardless of how active you are, drink plenty of water to remain hydrated.

3. Carry a water bottle with you and refill it throughout the day.

4. Freeze some freezer-safe water bottles. Take one with you for ice-cold water all day long!

5. Choose water over sugary drinks.

6. Add a wedge of lime or lemon to your water. This can help add taste.

7. Keep your pets hydrated too! Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets, and leave the water in a shady area.

Don’t wait to take the summer heat seriously. Staying hydrated is a simple and effective way to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy all summer long!
