Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is the largest 5K and 1-mile walk or run in the state of Indiana. Nearly 4,000 participants gathered together to raise over $360,000 to ensure individuals and families impacted by cancer in our community and region can find the social and emotional support they need FREE of charge. Since 2000, the annual event has brought together over 60,000 participants to walk, run, volunteer, or donate to “outrun cancer.”

The race was previously led by Bloomington Health Foundation (BHF) who held its inaugural event in 2000 in response to a high demand for non-medical cancer support services including support groups, nutrition and wellness, patient education, and social programs. In 2020, BHF passed the baton to Cancer Support Community (CSC) to help fund the newly launched south-central Indiana satellite location in Bloomington. “BHF was proud to have led the race for so many years. As the need for cancer services increased, it became evident an organization who better understood the patient’s experience and family needs would be best suited to push the race forward,” said Michelle Gilchrist, CEO of Bloomington Health Foundation.

With the support of a $1.5 million grant from Bloomington Health Foundation, the doors to its new facility, located in Bloomington at the intersection of Landmark Avenue and West 3rd Street, opened last fall. During its first year of operations, 334 non-medical services were provided to over 1700 individuals. Some of the participants’ favorite programs include massage and Reiki sessions, monthly nutrition for wellness classes featuring live cooking demonstrations in partnership with local chefs, and art classes. Recently added programs include a walking club, crafts and social hour. New programs coming soon include support groups for breast cancer and mindfulness.

CSC is committed to providing increased access to care for cancer patients, survivors, family members, and caregivers. All programs are FREE, and many have both in-person and virtual options. By continuing to expand the network of support and services beyond clinical needs, a stronger, healthier community is being created for the future, and ensuring no one in South Central Indiana faces cancer alone.

“We are honored to be entrusted with the community’s support of programs and services for those impacted by cancer.  Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is a major way Cancer Support Community South Central Indiana is able to keep all programs and services free.  We are indebted to the Bloomington Health Foundation and community-at-large and look forward to serving for years to come,” said Eric Richards, CEO of Cancer Support Community.
