St. Patrick’s Day observes the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The holiday has evolved into a celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, drinking, and a whole lot of green.

Although these are the things that are notorious for happening throughout the day, there are still many ways to capitalize on the holiday’s festive theme in a healthy and nutritious way.

Here are some ideas to make eating healthy fun for the entire family and to coincide with today’s green theme!

1. Serve up more green produce than normal. Try using options like broccoli, green beans, spinach, green peppers, or artichokes, as they are packed with all kinds of nutrients and can be considered festive today!

2. Embrace Ireland’s favorite veggie: potatoes. Potatoes contain healthy vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Try making some of Ireland’s favorites like potato soup, baby-boiled potatoes, sprouting potatoes, or mashed potatoes for the family.

3. Don’t forget dessert! Especially on a fun and festive holiday like today, you shouldn’t leave out a family favorite. Here are three different recipes that will play into today’s theme while still providing a nutritious element to the course. Pot ‘o Gold: Create fruit skewers with green grapes and kiwi slices. Place a pineapple chunk at each end to serve as the “pot ‘o gold.” Apple pie smoothie: Blend a little bit of baby spinach, Greek yogurt, and green apples. Mix in apple pie spice. Serve in 4-ounce portions. Honeydew sorbet: Make a green sorbet using honeydew melon.

Incorporating healthy elements into your holiday traditions can go beyond St. Patrick’s Day. Take some time to plan you and your family’s meals to make sure you’re bringing nutritious elements to them, but on holidays like this one, get creative with it and get the whole family involved. These moments will quickly turn into fond memories the whole family can reminisce on together!
