Local Heroes: Wheeler Mission

April 3, 2020

It has been humbling to witness the tremendous efforts of our united community to address a broad scope of issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. While BHF has worked to assist in philanthropic relief efforts and amplify local resources, we believe it is also important to highlight the uplifting stories of those whose service to our community has been exceptional in these formidable times.

Over the coming weeks, we will feature Local Heroes– individuals who are assisting our friends, family, and neighbors weather these challenges brought by the pandemic, starting with Joe at Wheeler Mission Bloomington.

Wheeler Mission Bloomington serves 125-140 guests daily who seek day services and overnight accomodations at the shelter. Joe works at their front desk as the Guest Services Hospitality Coordinator. Wearing his own mask, he meets guests arriving at Wheeler, many of whom are suffering from behavioral health issues in addition to experiencing homelessness.

Due to the pandemic, he is now charged with screening each incoming guest, ensuring they wash their hands and have their temperature taken before they enter the facilities. While this may seem simple for most, some of Wheeler Mission’s guests have mental health issues that are so significant that they are unable to wash their own hands. Joe will then step in and not only help these individuals wash their hands, but also deescalate the anxiety that is felt by those suffering from severe mental health issues, such as paranoia. He then escorts guests to the food service area and the facility showers if they are in need of bathing. Day after day, Joe gently guides these people in desperate need so they can finally feel safe, cared for, and listened to.

Joe, fearless and constantly driven by his desire to serve, continues to go above and beyond to help some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community. We continue to be inspired and hold deep gratitude for Joe and others like him who spearhead the movement for a healthier tomorrow.
