How to Nip Your Seasonal Allergies in the Bud
The spring season is here, and that means so is allergy season. Though many people are ecstatic that the spring season, warmer weather, and longer days are finally here, the season also brings its own set of challenges. One of the biggest challenges for many people has to do with allergies. Allergies are caused by the release of pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. Fortunately, there are ways to make spring as allergy free as possible!
One way is to avoid the triggers. Making sure to stay indoors during peak pollen times is important when trying to dodge the trigger. This does not mean to never go outside, but instead, stay indoors during peak times; in the morning and evening. The best time to go outdoors would be after heavy rainfall as it will clear pollen from the air. Keeping windows closed along with using an air purifier will also decrease the likelihood of pollen coming inside your home. After going outside, removing the clothes that were worn along with taking a shower will keep the pollen off and away from you.
An inexpensive way to relieve allergies has to do with rinsing your sinuses. Rinsing the nasal passages with a saline solution will flush out mucus, pollen, and allergens from the nose and will relieve nasal congestion. Saline solutions are available as ready-made or in easy-to-use kits. Make sure to use bottled water and wash and rinse the irrigation device to reduce the possibility of infection.
Another way to stay clear of allergies is to try some over-the-counter medications. One of these medications consists of Oral Antihistamines, which relieve sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, and watery eyes. Another option is Oral Decongestants which will provide temporary relief from stuffiness inside the nose. Make sure to talk to your healthcare provider to find the best medication for your symptoms.
Just because we are out of winter does not mean that all the struggles are gone. Allergy season can make people’s life very difficult and annoying at times as so many people want to spend time outside and socialize. Use these tips to make sure that allergies are not standing in the way of your ability to enjoy a healthy and fun spring!
