How to Manage Your Mental Health During the Holiday Season

When we think of the holiday season, we often think of the gift-giving, the holiday traditions, and gathering with the ones we love the most. Although, the holiday season can be quite triggering for some of those exact same reasons. When we combine financial troubles, a jam-packed social calendar, a loss of a loved one, or other traumas, the holiday season may not feel so merry and bright anymore.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 64% of individuals living with a mental illness felt that their conditions worsened around the holidays.

As this number increases year after year, we wanted to provide some tips on how to prioritize your mental health during what could pose as a challenging time for you.

  1. If you’re lacking the holiday spirit this year, don’t feel like you have to force yourself to be joyful if those aren’t your authentic feelings. Avoid any numbing substances and try surrounding yourself with people you feel similar to.
  2. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with grief or loss, schedule a check-in with a support group, a therapist, or a community that understands where you are. Let the people around you know how they can support you best during this time.
  3. If you’re feeling pressured to participate in holiday events – but you’re not feeling up for it, consider these things: Be patient with others, try to communicate your intentions, outline your plan for the season, prioritize the most important activities, and don’t be afraid to say “no.” You have to do what is best for you!
  4. If Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is affecting you this winter, try to get as much sunlight as possible throughout the day. When the days are shorter and the temperatures drop, it can lead to new or increased symptoms of seasonal depression.

Governor Holcomb Extends Indiana’s Public Health Emergency

Governor Eric Holcomb extended Indiana’s public health emergency through December 31st.

As Indiana has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations across the state, Governor Holcomb is acting on the side of caution. Holcomb also thought this action was best due to the rise of the omicron variant.

This extension will allow Hoosiers to continue to receive COVID-19 protections, such as increased food assistance and easy access to vaccines.

Recently, Holcomb has signaled a willingness to bring the public health emergency and requested legislative actions to a “responsible” halt. This updated extension will be revisited on December 31, 2021.
