COVID Vaccines: Authorization for Ages 12-15, Pop-Up & Walk-In Clinics
Nearly half of eligible Monroe County residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 38% are fully vaccinated. To continue working toward the goal of 75-80%, Monroe County Health Department is offering a pop-up vaccination clinic at the Monroe Convention Center on May 10 starting at 12 p.m., with second shots slated for June 7.
To further lower barriers, walk-in appointments are also now available across the state including Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. To verify a site’s walk-in status, visit OurShot.in.gov. For walk-in appointments, visiting earlier in the day is preferred.
Almost 30% of Hoosiers are fully vaccinated, behind the national rate of 32%. The state is working to close the gap by extending efforts to drive more rural populations to receive the vaccine.
According to data from the CDC, the number of Americans getting their first or single dose has fallen by 50% since April 13, when the FDA recommended a pause in administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. In addition, 8% of those who received their first two-dose shot did not return for their second. Health officials agree that it is never too late to receive the second dose as it significantly increases protection against the virus and potential variants.
The Pfizer vaccine, currently the only vaccine approved for ages 16 to 18, is now available for children 12 to 15 years old. Older vaccinated populations, the presence of virus variants, and increasingly loosening restrictions across the country are resulting in climbing COVID cases among children, representing approximately 22% of cases in the country.
The seven-day positivity rate for Monroe County is 1.09%, with 35% of cases seen in ages 20-29 and 23% in ages 0-19. For up-to-date COVID-19 data, visit the Indiana State Department of Health Dashboard.
The positivity rate for the IU Bloomington campus for the week of April 25 was 0.5%, up slightly from the week prior 0.3%.
