It has been humbling to witness the tremendous efforts of our united community to address a broad scope of issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. While BHF has worked to assist in philanthropic relief efforts and amplify local resources, we believe it is also important to highlight the uplifting stories of those whose service to our community has been exceptional in these formidable times.

Over the coming weeks, we will feature Local Heroes– individuals who are assisting our friends, family, and neighbors weather the challenges brought by the pandemic. For the second feature in our series, we’re proud to highlight the incredible work of the staff at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard has been working tirelessly to provide the community with access to nutritious food for more than 20 years. Since the pandemic, they have seen a significant surge in new patrons. In the two weeks leading up to April 3rd, they had distributed over 77,000 pounds of food, compared to their average monthly total of around 35,000 pounds.

The rising need for food forced MHC to forgo their normal education and advocacy programs so staff could be reallocated to food distribution. Out of safety for patrons and staff, volunteer positions have also been temporarily discontinued, leaving the staff alone to pack boxes for curbside pickup and placing them into patron car trunks on pickup days. They have also decreased their operations to three days a week in response to the reduced staff capacity, and in an effort to encourage individuals to stay home unless absolutely necessary.

A heartfelt thanks go out to the staff at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard who are offering crucial services to our most vulnerable populations during this difficult time. Follow them on Facebook for regular updates and ways in which you can support them as they feed our community.
